Dear Sir,

Your favor of Oct 23" referring to the Am. Miss. Asso. the application of Rev. John Kimball with the request that we should supply one third of the number named, has had careful consideration.

I am sorry to be compelled to say that, at present, we can not give you any encouragement of complying with the request.

Before the receipt of Mr. Kimballs letter we had already made as many pledges for supplying teachers as we can reasonably hope to fulfil.

Owing in part, probably to the excitement of the fall elections: but more to the uncertain condition of business, arising from the depreciation of values, contributions to the cause of education among the Freedmen, are more than already limited, hence we are compelled to decline much that we would delight to do.

Very sincerely, Yours &c
