As a consequence of the greatly increased number of specimens received during the present year the routine work of installing, identifying, caring for, labelling and reporting upon there has been more than twice as heavy as during any previous year. In addition to this the department has had on hand the preparation of its part of the exhibit for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, so that the curator and his assistant have had their time fully occupied without much chance of effecting a better arrangement of the old collections.
