[[underlined]]Patent Model Collection[[/underlined]]

The U.S. Patent Model Foundation has received its tax exemption, expanded its Board of Directors, and developed a draft $17 million fund-raising plan which is now being reviewed by the Smithsonian. Funds sought would be sufficient to acquire, transfer to the Smithsonian, and prepare for public use a large collection of patent models remaining from those once held by the U.S. Patent Office. These resources would enhance the Museum's ability to study and exhibit developments in 19th century American technology. The Smithsonian could agree to accept the collection only if the entire amount of money is raised to endow the care of the collection permanently.

[[underlined]]Visitor Information and Associates' Reception Center[[/underlined]]

In December the Secretary designated the Smithsonian Institution Building as the site for the Institution's primary visitor orientation and information center, thereby laying the groundwork for significantly enhanced efforts to increase the Smithsonian's capability to inform, orient and serve its visitors, and to promote and support associate membership throughout the Institution. Information services will be located in the Great Hall, which will be redesigned for more effective response to the needs of the full range of Smithsonian visitors. Exhibit emphasis in this area will follow a pan-Institutional theme, incorporating the history of the Smithsonian as well as its position in and relationship to the City of Washington. This project is scheduled to be completed by the time of the opening of the Quadrangle gardens in the summer of 1986.
