[[underlined]] Hiring and Promotions [[/underlined]]

Overall, the number of employees in the professional category showed an increase from 589 in 1983 to 628 in FY 1984, an increase of 39 or 6.2%. The occupation families reflected no significant decreases; however, categories of Science, Museum Curator, and Engineering/Mathematics showed numerical gains from 252 to 270, 85 to 97, and 68 to 72 respectively (Appendix 2).

A comparison of accessions (Appendix 3) in the professional occupations shows that, in comparison to FY 1983, the Institution has significantly increased the number and percentage of nonminority women among its new employees. In contrast, while the number of accessions for minority men and women remained constant from FY 1982 to 1983, their percentage among new employees decreased significantly, from 3 (8.1%) and 5 (13.5%) in FY 1983 to 2 (3.5%) and 4 (6.9%) in FY 1984.

A comparison of accessions (Appendix 3) in the administrative occupations shows a significant increase in the number and percentage of women from 3 (4.6%) in FY 1983 to 10 (12.4%) in FY 1984. Meanwhile, nonminority women and men showed a slight increase in number, but a slight decrease in percentages, since there was an increase in the total number in the category.

The overall number and percentage of professional promotions to nonminority women decreased significantly from 25 (37.9%) in FY 1983 to 14 (22.2%) in FY 1984. The number of promotions to minority men remained constant and decreased slightly for minority women (Table 4 and Appendix 4).
