- meeting with officials of 32 organization units to promote the employment and advancement of women, particularly in areas where they are underrepresented.

- serving as liaison between the Smithsonian Institution Women's Council and the Office of Equal Opportunity; providing guidance and technical assistance to the Council as a whole, and to particular council committees.

- providing career counseling and career development information to approximately 175 employees and applicants for employment, predominately women, through individual and group meetings at organizations in and outside of the Washington metropolitan area; provision of information on the continuing education part of upward mobility.

- providing general and specific information in child care to approximately 25 employees.

[[underlined]]UPWARD MOBILITY[[/underlined]]

The Upward Mobility Program was the vehicle used to train and place the Institution's first female Building Manager at the Air and Space Museum. In addition four wage grade employees successfully completed upward mobility training and moved into white collar administrative positions. One employee entered the program in FY 1984 and is currently being trained for a professional position. One employee is in the continuing education part of the program.

[[underlined]]OUTREACH PROGRAM[[/underlined]]

There still exists a critical need for the Smithsonian to continue outreach to minority and women's communities, groups and organizations to increase their participation in Institution programs, activities and exhibitions. Outreach activities conducted by the Office of Equal Opportunity include disseminating information about SI programs and activities and placing outreach messages in minority and women publications to establish and strengthen ties and networks with minority and women's organizations and community groups.

During FY 1984, the Office of Equal Opportunity sponsored appropriate exhibits and themes at five major national conferences: National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), The President's Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped, Federally Employed Women (FEW), and La Raza, an Hispanic organization. Exhibit booth materials focused on disseminating information on programs, activities, and research and study opportunities at the Institution; as well as featuring such exhibitions as "Out of Africa" and "Black Women: Achievements
