As noted in the November 1984 [[underlined]]Newsletter to the Regents[[/underlined]], the Secretary appointed Dr. John E. Reinhardt as the Director of a newly created Directorate of International Activities, effective October 1. Dr. Reinhardt came to the Smithsonian in 1981 as the Acting Director of the National Museum of African Art, and in 1983 he was named Assistant Secretary for History and Art. Prior to coming to the Smithsonian Dr. Reinhardt had been a Professor of English at Virginia State College, a U.S foreign service officer, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, and Director of the U.S. Information Agency. The Directorate of International Activities will be responsible for the development of programs for the International Center and for continuing supervision of the work of the Office of Service and Protocol (formerly the Office of International Services) and the Office of Publications Exchange (formerly the International Exchange Service).

The Secretary has appointed Mr. Dean W. Anderson as the Acting Assistant Secretary for History and Art as of October 1. Mr. Anderson has served with increasing responsibilities under the Assistant Secretary for History and Art since coming to the Institution in 1973. Before coming to the Smithsonian he was a budget examiner at the Office of Management and Budget. He holds a B.A. from Macalester College and a M.A. in Public Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

The position formerly occupied by Mr. Paul N. Perrot has been redescribed and retitled as the Assistant Secretary for Museums. The search for candidates for the position was extended in light of this change and it is now anticipated that a selection can be made by early spring.
