NEW CASES:

1. [[underlined]] Liles v. United States and Howard Toy [[/underlined]]

This suit, brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act and the U.S. Constitution, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in September 1985. Plaintiff alleges false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and lack of due process in removal. The case arises from the arrest of plaintiff on August 3, 1982, for the molestation of a young female visitor to the National Museum of American Art and the subsequent termination of plaintiff from his position as a security guard. The administrative claim filed by plaintiff had been denied on grounds that the claim was untimely filed and without merit. Plaintiff seeks $500,000 against each defendant and reinstatement to his position. Pretrial proceedings are underway.

2. [[underlined]] Rentz v. Consolidated Elevator Co. [[/underlined]]

This suit was brought under the Federal Tort Claims Act in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in October 1985. The case arises from injuries sustained by plaintiff's son from an escalator in the National Museum of American History on August 3, 1984. The administrative claim in this case has been denied because the Smithsonian investigation found no negligence and the matter was referred to Consolidated Elevator Company for disposition. Pretrial proceedings are underway.

3. [[underlined]] Trousdale v. Adams [[/underlined]]

Plaintiff, a curator in the Department of Anthropology of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, brought this suit under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in August 1985. In the meantime, negotiations to settle the case have been initiated.
