The Development Committee, meeting frequently, will review all proposals in excess of $100,000, determining priorities and guiding the efforts of the Development Office and the bureau and office directors as appropriate.

Major development projects now under way include:

[[underlined]] National Museum of African Art. [[/underlined]] After completion of a thorough feasibility study, a $5.5 million capital campaign for acquisitions has been launched recently. Campaign staff and office procedures are being organized, with the goal of having the lead gifts pledged by the opening next year. Solicitations are under way for three major exhibitions to open with the Quadrangle in June 1987: "Cycle of Life," $575,000 (of which $220,000 has been pledged by Cafritz Foundation); "Fabric of Life," $200,000 (submitted to the Smithsonian's Special Exhibition Fund); and the Permanent Collection, $150,000 (aiming at various major corporate possibilities, including Philip Morris).

The [[underlined]] Cooper-Hewitt Museum [[/underlined]]'s Capital Campaign goal has been raised to $12.5 million to match a projected federal appropriation by 1991. To date, $3.2 million has been raised.

[[underlined]] Directorate of International Activities. [[/underlined]] Requirements for a ten-part Public Television series on Latin America, to be written and narrated by Carlos Fuentes and produced by Michael Gill, include: $4.4 million for production to be shared, $1.2 million Channel Four (U.K.) and $3.2 million Smithsonian Institution; and $1.8 million additional for educational adjunct programs. Of 29 U.S. corporations approached, only Xerox is now a possibility. Other initiatives are under way with important Latin American business leaders. The Mellon Foundation has potential for minor support when major support is assured.
