to the old Sapnish crossing of Green River, at the ford the river is about 250 yards wide and very shallow. Saw a vast pile of Satin spar on the east side ten miles below the ford. Came in sight of "Uncompargre" mountains; they are a beautiful cluster of snow capped cones in western Colorado south of Green river. Made 40 miles and camped on the east side, near the head of another canon. The valley or rather desert first passed is of little use to any one, the upland is burned to death and on the river there is a few cottonwood trees, but not large enough for any purpose but fuel. 

       July 14th. Pulled out early and ran 33 miles through as desolate a country as any one need wish to see. The walls of the canon about a quarter of a mile apart composed of a bluff sandstone destitute of any strata. On the river there is in some places a small table that affords a footing for a few willows; at intervals of four or five miles there are also clumps of [[strikethrough]] cr [[/strikethrough]] scrubby cottonwood trees. River about 125 yeards wide with a current of one and a half miles per hour. 

        July 15th. Off again at seven o'clock and a repetition of yesterday's work. Passed the mouth of "San Rafael" five miles below camp. It is another dirty stream 8 rod [[strikethrough]]es[[/strikethrough]] wide and a foot deep, comes in from the west. River very crooked, saw several beaver but got only one. Got one goose out of a flock that we have driven before us for three days. Walls of canon 350 feet perpendicular on both sides, except at
