The remaining six men lifted the two large boats over the rock past some of the rapids, abandoned the small boat as useless property and pulled out and ran the rest of the damned rapid with a ringing cheer though at great risk as the boats shipped nearly half full in a perfect fell of form.  Bailed out and pulled out again and ran 10 more rapids in 6 miles when we came to another hell.  There is a - - - - - - - - pouring in from the south - - - or large rocks that - - - - - - - - - to make a very bad - - - - - - -"Maid" down with - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - we came out toma low rolling desert and saw plainly that our wo work of danger was done - gave three cheers and pulled away steady stroke till 5 o'clock when we camped on the south side and summed up the log found we had run 42 1/2 miles.

August 30.  Pulled out at sunrise and made 24 miles by noon seeing nothing but smooth water and rolling desert till 10 o'clock when we came to the palatial residence of a Pah-U te Indian found the paternal head of a large family without even the figleaf, wallowing in the hot sand and ashes under some weeds thrown over two poles. Her ladyship's costume was nice, light and cool. It consisted of half yard of dirty buckskin, and brass ring. She was as disgusting a hag as ever rode a broomstock. Camped for dinner on the north side. Pulled out at one o'clock and rowed about 7 miles
