ROUNDABOUT THEATRE COMPANY (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) over the course of 32 seasons has grown from a small 150-seat theatre in a converted supermarket basement to become one of America's most significant producers of theatre. The not-for-profit, subscription-based company is committed to producing definitive interpretations of classic plays and musicals, ensuring that audiences and artists alike have access to high quality, professional stagings of important works that might not otherwise be presented in a purely commercial environment. Production highlights include Joe Egg (Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Revival), Anna Christie (Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Revival), She Loves Me (Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Olivier Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Tony nomination for Best Musical Revival) and The Molière Comedies (Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Tony nominations for Best Revival of a Play). Two Roundabout productions from 1997-1998 season: 1776 and A View from the Bridge have been transferred to commercial Broadway engagements. In seven seasons on Broadway under Todd Haimes' artistic direction, Roundabout has received 34 Tony nominations, 27 Drama Desk nominations, and 35 Outer Critics Circle nominations. Roundabout has recently expanded its repertoire to include the premieres of new plays by great writers of the present day. To that end, Roundabout has introduced a New Plays Initiative and in 1995 opened the Off-Broadway Laura Pels Theatre whose inaugural season included the American premiere of Brian Friel's Molly Sweeney (Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play and New York Theatre Drama Critics Award for Best Foreign Play). Roundabout is recognized as a national leader in audience development and offers a comprehensive education program of school-time performances, in-school residencies and related humanities events and publications.
