LIBRARY'S NEW FACE The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, which houses the world's most extensive combination of circulating, reference and rare archival collections i its field, is undergoing a two-year, $30 million renovation beginning this month. The library's capital improvement project - the first major renovation since it opened in 1965 - has been launched by a gift of funds from Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman. "When the renovation is complete, the building that houses The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will be named the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center," announced Dr. Paul LeClerc, the library's president. "The library is also grateful," he added, "to the City of New York for its major contributions towards this important project."

"We intend to reconfigure the use of space in the building, creating new and improved reading rooms and exhibition galleries," says Robert Marx, executive director of the library. "This will resolve long-standing service problems, while we anticipate future growth of collections, exhibitions and performances. We are also installing computer networks that will provide access to a wide range of databases through library workstations or our users' own laptop computers."

Other features of the renovation will include a new library information/welcome center, improvements to speed retrieval of materials, more efficient storage of materials, centralized playback for videotape archives, enhancements to the Bruno Walter Auditorium and a central reading room for research material.

Among the countless people who have availed themselves of the library's rich resources is director Harold Prince, whose visits to the Theatre Collection at the 42nd St. branch as a child, he says, marked "the start of my lifetime love affair with the theatre New York City has always been and remains the clearing house for live theatre in the United States, and so having all this material in one central location has been invaluable. When the library moves home in the year 2000, its treasure trove will be more readily available to artists and scholars."

During the renovation the library facility at Lincoln Center will be closed. However, most of the collections will be accessible at the following locations (subject to change):

The Research Collections will move on July 20 to the Library Annex at 521 W. 43rd St. They will be closed during the three-week move, but will reopen at the Annex in mid-August. The Circulating Collections will remain open at Lincoln Center until August 10, close for two weeks and then reopen in late August on the fourth floor of the Mid-Manhattan Library at Fifth Ave. & 40th St. Library users should contact individual departments when planning research during this time.
