FASHION AVENUE
SWEAT IT OUT There you are, in your summer sheers, randomly skimming an article about...sweaters? It's too soon, you think. Yet despite your skepticism you read on, regarding the cozy fabrics, dramatic colors, sweeping styles-and suddenly you long for September. Welcome to fall '98, where ready to wear has never been so easy to wear.

Skirts, when teamed with sweaters, are longer, going below the knee and down. Look for shades that blend. Note the eloquent pairing of Susan Lazar's charcoal eight-ply cashmere crewneck with a wool wrap skirt in cobalt (top, left).

The draped look is also featured in long pants. Roomy legs that sweep when you walk, cut in flattering fabrics, are fabulous when paired with straight, cozy knit sweaters in solid colors. Jill Stuart's long-sleeved sweater, worn with her light gray cashmere pants (top, right) is charismatic proof.

Looking for some excitement in your sweater drawer? Elizabeth Fillmore's aubergine crochet knit cardigan and skirt (bottom, left) may just be the jolt your wardrobe is looking for. The rich color and textural mix creates a flattering silhouette that is both modern and timeless.

Straight from the martini, it's olive! Nicole Miller's stretch terry boat neck top in olive, flounced with a fox stole (bottom, right), shimmies over a black paisley burn-out matte skirt.
