SPOTLIGHT ON DIANE VON FURSTENBERG

by Bernadine Morris

“I’ve met thousands of women,” said Diane Von Furstenberg. “I’ve met them in stores all over the country. They’re always very nice to me. They tell me their problems, I try to suggest things, and I learn so much from them.”

They’ve made her dress collection one of the fastest selling lines in this country—they will buy about $25 million worth this year—and they will make her three-year old cosmetics venture equally profitable, she believes.

Part of the reason women trust Diane is that, despite the glamour that surrounds her, she identifies with them. She also has a keen appreciation of their problems. They're her problems too. At 29, she's in the process of finding her niche in life.

"Women are becoming a lot more aware of other things besides clothes," she explains. "They want to look pretty, but they don't want to fuss about it. They want dresses that flatter them but don't require a lot of care."

All of her dresses are washable and cost from $68 to $100. All of them can be packed in a suitcase or a tote bag and emerge unruffled. She wears them herself all the time. (Continued on next page)
