To extend this seminal effort across the nation, INBA has set up thirty-six branches outside the capital. Today, the full-time employees of the Institute exceed 4,000. This group includes some 500 salaried artists, of whom 200 are musicians associated with the national symphony and the opera orchestras and another 100 are singers. The INBA opera project has attempted - as have all the Bellas Artes programs - to build repertoires of the original works of Mexican artists. There are not too many significant operas extant that have been created by indigenous composers, however, so the bulk of those performed are of Italian, German or French origin. In general, INBA has found it necessary - or at least preferrable - to bring in "international artists" from other countries to handle the star operatic parts.

In addition to the 500 year-round artists, INBA also hires many others on contracts for specific temporary projects or assignment. Most of the Bellas Artes thespians are contract employees. Some years ago, there was an attempt to build a repertory company. This effort had some limited success, but was apparently recognized as being a bit premature and has been temporarily shelved. The closest thing to an INBA repertory group today may be found in the student company that stages productions in the 180 seat theatre of the Institute's School of Theatre Arts. The Escuela de Artes Teatral - fully subsidized - produces about 150 actors, directors, playwrights and set designers annually. "It has been operating for some eighteen years, and many of Mexico's outstanding theatre people are graduates," says Goristiza with more than a flicker of pride.

The role of the Institute in developing dance in Mexico has been decisive and won international acclaim. While INBA has been supporting and operating a
