National Academia de la Danza for both classical and modern ballet for years, it is the dynamic and colorful Ballet Folklorico that has been Mexico's major cultural export recently. This group now numbers 75 dancers, singers and musicians, and emphasizes both the pre-Spanish and current choreographic themes. It was founded in 1952 by an imaginative female teacher of modern dance at INBA, Amalia Hernandez. In 1959, the Ballet Folklorico became an "official national company" with INBA support. There are two fascinating troupes, one that performs year-round at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City and another that tours overseas. The latter will be swinging through the United States under the auspices of S. Hurok in the immediate future; it is well worth seeing.

As the interest and recognition have risen, Amalia Hernandez has expanded her training program. Today, INBA is also backing her young School of Folklore Dance. The Institute has been experimenting with other dance programs, and now has a Ballet Populaire that performs in the major cities.

This same commitment to "reach all the Mexican people" is reflected throughout the Bellas Artes theatre program, which is impressively diverse. The attempt to develop the widest possible audience begins right down in kindergarten, part of an effort that reaches more than 2,000 children daily in the capital alone. The children buy their admission for anywhere between one penny and sixteen cents (U.S.), depending on the affluence of the neighborhood in which the school is situated. The entire class pays the same price.

For the kindergarten and primary grades, the Institute sends out puppet shows that tour the schools. The older children go to one of the half-dozen theatres that Bellas Artes run in the capital, usually the 1,200 seat Teatro del Bosque
