Although Maria Schell has been an international star for most of her acting career, it wasn't until this fall that she made her debut on Broadway in the brilliant Czech drama Poor Murderer. For the first 45 minutes of this play Maria performs in silence, and yet audiences have difficulty taking their eyes off of her. Aside from the violet eyes and the dazzling smile, there's an extraordinary light that radiates from this actress and reaches to the very last row of the theatre.
Her fashion philosophy also reflects this sensitivity... this delicate balance between the old and the new.... "Fashion," says Maria, "is a statement of the times we live in--like a flashlight on what is happening in the world. Quite often it is ahead of thoughts and feelings yet to be expressed. For me, the way I dress is spiritual and has nothing to do with vanity. It is a joyful way to express my own aliveness. I'm excited by a new dress because it does something to my psyche.
