Broadway on CD

Within a week, nine CDs of Broadway shows have arrived on my desk. Three of them are RCA Victor Original Broadway Cast Recordings, Fosse, the current dance revue hit at the Broadhurst Theatre, is a melange of vintage hits ("Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries," "There'll Be Some Changes Made," "Bye Bye Blackbird") and show-stoppers from such Bob Fosse musicals as The Pajama Game, Little Me, Sweet Charity and many more...The controversial musical Parade with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown and book by Alfred Uhry sounds even more impressive on record than it did onstage in the Lincoln Center Theater production...Fore a change of pace, RCA Victor has issued a CD of the current Broadway one-man show, Via Dolorosa, written by and starring playwright David Hare. The work was inspired by

The show is at the Booth Theatre until June 13...Broadway Angel Records has released the new Broadway cast recording of Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun, starring Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat. The current revival at the Marquis Theatre contains a song-"An Old Fashioned Wedding"-that was written for the 1966 revival and two songs from the original 1946 production-"I'll Share It All With You" and "Who Do You Love, I Hope" that were cut from the 1966 revival...From DRG Records comes three new CDs-the current Off-Broadway revue Forbidden Broadway Cleans Up Its Act!; last year's Cole Porter musical, High Society; and Fame-The Musical, a stage adaptation of the movie and television musical...And finally, Varèse Sarabande offers The Sondheim Collection, songs culled by Bruce Kimmel from various Sondheim albums he has produced. The result is a joyous celebration of Sondheim's gems from both Broadway musicals and Hollywood films.

The Ups and Downs of Acting Robert Simonson, co-editor of Playbill On-Line, has written a unique theatre book-Role of a Lifetime-that is a must read for anyone contemplating an acting career. He has chosen four actors-Austin Pendleton, Gloria Foster, Lois Smith and Ron Rifkin-who are not household names, but who have admirably survived the roller-coaster life of a thespian. After reading of their triumphs and disasters, you may well choose another profession, or, like Ron Rifkin-who renounced acting and went into his father's fur business-return to the theatre to win a Tony Award for Cabaret. Austin Pendleton had a serious handicap-stuttering-to overcome, but he finally prevailed. Gloria Foster and Lois Smith stuck to acting through thick and thin. Their downfalls and comebacks are vividly etched by Mr. Simonson via in-depth interviews, with the reader rejoicing whenever a career is salvaged by a rave review by a critic who has, on other occasions, trashed an actor's efforts (Back Stage Books).
