Robert Ross
Before coming to Broadway, Robert Ross, the director, assisted Rouben Mamoulian at the Eastman Theatre, Rochester, in staging such productions as "Pinafore," "Madame Butterfly" and "Faust." He made his bow here as an actor with Eva Le Gallienne's repertory company, with which he remained for six years, meanwhile helping found a summer theatre at Nantucket, R.I. His first directorial assignment in New York was "The Farmer Takes A Wife." Among the plays he has staged since are George Bernard Shaw's "On The Rocks;" "On Stage," with the late Osgood Perkins; "One for the Money," James Bridie's "The Black Eye"; productions for the St. Louis Municipal Opera Company and the Cheryl Crawford - John Wildberg version of "Porgy and Bess." As talent scout for Warner Brother, he started Priscilla and Rosemary Lane, Brenda Marshall, John Garfield and Alan Marshall on their Hollywood careers and recommended a then unknown actor, Orson Welles, as a sure picture bet (Recommendation not accepted). Most recently, he has been overseas with Katherine Cornell's company of "The Berretts of Wimpole Street."

Eva Jessye
Eva Jessye, the assistant director, is internationally known as a conductor of vocal ensembles. Eva Jessye Choirs are considered the finest in the radio field and have made many national concert tours, sometimes with symphony orchestras. Her first work for the stage was directing and training the ensemble for "Four Saints in Three Acts." She had a hand in the production of "Porgy and Bess" and was also music director of the first all-Negro musical film, "Hallelujah." Miss Jessye is considered an authority on Negro folklore, music, customs and dances and has published a book of spirtiuals.
