George Jenkins
In a few brief seasons, George Jenkins, the scenic designer, has emerged as one of the most brilliant young men in his field. His settings for "I Remember Mama," "Mexican Hayride," "Dark of the Moon," "allah Be Praised," "Early to Bed" and other productions are all earmarked for their beauty and originality. Before starting on his own, he was associated with Jo Mielziner for "By Jupiter" and "Abe Lincoln in Illinois." His first training was with the Philadelphia Plays and Players, well-known amateur organization of that city, and with its Savoy Company, for productions of Gilbert and Sullivan with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra at the Academy of Music.
Lucinda Ballard
The background of Lucinda Ballard includes designing about everything from book jackets to costumes for the Ringling Circus, one of her last year's assignments. Most recently, she has been responsible for the costumes in "I Remember Mama," "Sing Out Sweet Land," "Stars On Ice" and "American Jubilee" at the World's Fair, as well as both costumes and settings for the Ballet Theatre's "Giselle" and "Peter and the Wolf." For some years, Miss Ballard was assistant to Norman Bel Geddes. She began designing on her own for the Dwight Deere Wiman production of "As You Like It," following that with "Great Lady," "Morning's at Seven" and "Higher and Higher." She is a native of New Orleans and studied painting and the French drama in Paris. Her first promotional work in this country was as painter of the ceiling of the Kalamazoo church.
