of blood. In this condition he was thrown into the county jail. The deputy Sherif stated to me that he did not expect to find the man alive on the next morning. He the Deputy Sherif went to the said Magistrate on the following morning (it being Sunday) and remonstrated against inflicting the punishment on the ground of its indecency in the presence of the Citizens assembling for Church and of its cruelty while the man was in so low a condition, saying that he would probably die under the punishment. The said Magistrate insisted that it should be inflicted without any remission threatening to punish him the said Deputy Sherif if he failed to carry it out.

The punishment was inflicted with the exception that the Sherif allowed the man's feet to practically touch the ground while he was tied up by the thumbs.

A statement of the case was sent to Brigd Genl Harding Commdg this Dist with a request that the said men, Song and Camel be arrested and held for trial. Since the above was written have learned beyond a doubt that Camel was in fault and that Cotton was only acting in self defence
