W. H. Warden being duly sworn testifies as follows. I was connected with the Freedman Bureau in Rowan County (Salisbury N.C) Doctor Holt came to the office of the Freedmans Bureau during the month of August or September, and asked to relieved from keeping his negroes, and offered to pay them gold for taking them off of his hands. this is a proposition that had been made and refused in a hundred cases or more. Doct Holt was told that this was an arrangement that could not be made and that he must keep his negroes until the 1st January
