Dear Mr. Seligman,

I have just received proof from Mr. Eitner, and find that he has excised from his letter to you the reference to Mr. Pierre Dubaut and to the omission of Mr. Dubaut's name from your list of the men who have enlarged our knowledge of Gericault.

As a result I am deleting from the Master Proof your reply to that reference, i.e. I am deleting your sentences, "I also want to thank him for his suggestion that I consult Mr. Pierre Dubaut. As long as Mr. Dubaut's name, as Mr. Eitner carefully notes, was omitted from my list of "the men who have enlarged our knowledge of Gericault's work," I need say no more."

I can understand that you might not like us to omit this [[underlined]] riposte [[/underlined]]. However, since Mr. Eitner has decided not to make this statement, entirely of his own volition and without seeing your reply, I think we must allow him to omit it and must consequently omit your reference to it. (Perhaps to be entirely clear I should add to the above, that Mr. Eitner does not know anything about your reply - except I have told him, before I saw your reply, that you would be allowed a reply.)

Faithfully yours,

P.S. The sentences omitted occur in the third paragraph from the end of your reply. -JCW
