[[underlined]] Bicentennial of the Constitution [[/underlined]]

The first major Smithsonian Bicentennial initiative will be held May 18-23 in Charlottesville, Virginia and Washington, D.C. It is the international symposium sponsored by the Smithsonian's Office of Interdisciplinary Studies and the American Bar Association on "Constitutional Roots, Right and Responsibilities." In the fall, the American History Museum will open "A More Perfect Union: Japanese Americans and the United States Constitution" (note the new name) and a recently planned exhibition tentatively titled, "The Blessings of Liberty." "Blessings" will use posters from an exhibition recently toured by Project '87 and material from American History's "We the People" exhibition. "American Colonial Portraits: 1700-1776" (another new title) will open at the National Portrait Gallery on October 9.

In addition to these and other planned events, the Smithsonian's Office of Exhibits Central has been instrumental in the design and installation of "Roads to Liberty," a Bicentennial Commission touring exhibition, and in fabricating free-standing panels with information on the Constitution for the Mall for the National Park Service.
