[[underlined]] U.S. Patent Foundation [[/underlined]]

For the past six months, the chief activity of the U.S. Patent Model Foundation has been a nationwide contest for school children through the eighth grade called "Invent America!" This program, which was funded by Mastercard International, has received strong support from state and local school officials as well as the Commissioner of Patents, the Department of Education, and other government officials. Based on successful classroom "invention programs" that were designed to stimulate creative thinking, it will involve over seven million school children this spring in every state, including thirteen that have announced statewide programs. In June, there will be a National Award Ceremony in Washington, to be followed by an exhibit of the winning inventions at the Smithsonian over the summer. In addition, the Patent Model Foundation is sponsoring education activities designed by Smithsonian staff for the winning inventors, their teachers, and their families.

Mastercard International is studying the results of the program with the thought of expanding its support of the U.S. Patent Model Foundation. Its Board is contemplating encouraging local member banks to issue affinity cards that would support the Foundation's work, including its goals of recovering the Patent Models. Mastercard's future plans will presumably be better known by the end of the summer.
