VOTED that the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, acting on behalf of the Board, names the auditorium of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden the Marion and Gustave Ring Auditorium in recognition of their beneficence to the Smithsonian Institution.

In addition, the record should show that in July, in response to a generous anonymous offer to the Museum of African Art, it was

VOTED that the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, acting on behalf  of the Board, approves the naming of the Library of the National Museum of African Art in honor of the Museum's founding director, Warren Robbins, as proposed by an anonymous donor. 

[[underlined]] Nomination of Senator Mathias for Regents' Committees [[/underlined]]

The Board expressed its approval for the appointment of former Senator Charles McC. Mathias to the Audit and Review Committee and the Personnel Committee to fill vacancies created by the recent resignation of Ambassador Kenneth W. Rush. In accordance with the bylaws, the Chancellor may appoint members to these committees with the approval of the Board. 

[[underlined]] Report of the Audit and Review Committee [[/underlined]]

The Audit and Review Committee met on June 23, 1987 and discussed Coopers and Lybrand's audit plan for fiscal year 1987 funds, including its planned procedures and allocations of time. Coopers and Lybrand also led a discussion of proposed new auditing standards for not-for-profit organizations. In a brief executive session the Committee discussed the advantages and disadvantages of continuing a long-term relationship with a particular auditing firm and concluded in the final analysis that Coopers and Lybrand has served the Institution effectively, has continued to be conscientious in rotating its key officers and staff periodically to assure a reasonably fresh perspective, and should be retained for the 1987 audit, though the Committee should review again the issue of changing auditors in a few years.
 
Following a brief overview of the Natural History Museum as a research organization, the Committee was given a tour of three research laboratories in which scientists of the Museum described the significance and techniques of their research, with each showing representative samples of the collections and stressing the importance of collecting as a means of widening the boundaries of mankind's understanding of itself and its interaction with the environment.
