The science activities developed at the summer workshop are now being used to prepare the first set of "Science and Technology for Children" elementary science units. Each of these units will include a teacher's guide, student activity sheets, and specifications for the kit of science materials and apparatus needed to teach the activities in the unit. The units will be field-tested in the school systems that participated in the summer workshop.

Grants Received for NSRC Activities

The NSRC has just been notified of a $733,000 grant that has been received from the MacArthur Foundation in support of "Science and Technology for Children." The MacArthur grant will require the NSRC to raise approximately $1 million in additional funds for the project during the next four years.

In addition to the MacArthur Foundation grant, the NSRC also received a gift of five computers from Apple Computer, Inc. These computers are being installed in the NSRC resource center, and will be used for the preview and evaluation of science and mathematics instructional software.

[[underlined]] Smithsonian Institution Press [[/underlined]]

The Smithsonian Institution Press continues to publish books and recordings which reflect the broad range of Smithsonian collections, research interests and achievements while maintaining the steady growth which has been going on at the Press for more than a decade.

University Press Division

In the University Press Division the federally funded Contributions and Studies Series program has reached its goal of complete electronic processing of all manuscripts. With all the components of its desk top publishing system in place, the program staff members edit and typeset all federally funded series manuscripts on computer terminals. This development has eliminated the financial charges to bureau sponsors for type-setting and page makeup. Estimated savings to the Institution during the past year covered the cost of the equipment for the electronic system. Moreover, series editors now have greater control over production details and offer authors greater typographic flexibility at lower costs than was previously possible.

In the trade book section of the University Press Division the new Smithsonian Series in Archaeological Inquiry was inaugurated with the publication of [[underlined]] The Archaeology of Western Iran [[/underlined]].
