[[underlined]] REGENTS' DINNER [[/underlined]]

The Regents' dinner was held on the previous evening in the Arts and Industries Building. Mr. Adams welcomed the Regents and their guests, including the members of the Cultural Education Committee and the Committee for a Wider Audience. After speaking briefly about the origins and establishment of these committees and their importance to the Institution, he explained the concepts of "representation" and "cultural equity" and expressed confidence that the Smithsonian will move sensitively in these areas. He then introduced Regent Jeannine Clark as the guiding force in the creation of the Cultural Education Committee. After alluding to the trials of Mrs. Macie (the mother of James Smithson) in the struggle to use her rightful name and after asking members of the Cultural Education Committee and the Committee for a Wider Audience to stand and be recognized, Mrs. Clark introduced Mr. Richard West, a founding member of the Cultural Education Committee. Mr. West expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to speak on the work of the Committee and praised the candor and openness of the Secretary in addressing difficult issues arising from the need to improve in affirmative action and representation in programming. Mr. West focused on the recommendations of the Committee toward enhancing the Smithsonian's affirmative action program, speaking candidly and critically about areas in which substantive improvements are needed.
