[[underlined]]REGENTS' DINNER[[/underlined]]

The traditional Regents' Dinner was held in the National Air and Space Museum on the preceding evening, Sunday, September 18, 1988. After a brief reception in the Milestones of Flight Gallery, the Regents and their guests were seated in the Space Hall for a short presentation in which the Chancellor welcomed the guests, hailed the opening of the Museum's restaurant on the previous day, and introduced the Secretary. Mr. Adams thanked the Chancellor for his supportive comments about the spectacular new restaurant, spoke of the genesis of the evening's program, and introduced Museum Director Martin Harwit. Speaking about the importance of international cooperation in astrophysical research, Dr. Harwit referred to the exhibit recently installed in the Museum on the European Space Agency's Giotto space craft which had made unprecedented close observations of Halley's Comet in 1986 and confirmed the hypotheses postulated in 1951 by former Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory director Fred L. Whipple. Dr. Whipple in turn offered commentary on a video tape which showed close-up views of the Comet's core as recorded by the Giotto mission. Upon the conclusion of this brief program, the guests were invited to walk through buffet lines and were seated for dinner in the east section of the "Flight Line" cafeteria.
