SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
SUMMARY PROCEEDINGS OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS
The Carlisle H. Humelsine Memorial Meeting
January 30, 1989

[[underlined]] TRIBUTE TO CARLISLE H. HUMELSINE [[/underlined]]

The Chancellor announced the passing of Carlisle H. Humelsine, devoted Regent of the Smithsonian, and it was:

RESOLVED that the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution has received with profound sorrow the news of Carlisle H. Humelsine's death on January 26, 1989. The Regents express their heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Humelsine and the Humelsine family but cannot adequately convey their deep sense of loss which the Institution and the nation have sustained in the passing of this extraordinary citizen, public servant, and member of the Board of Regents.

With all his consuming responsibilities he never failed to maintain an active interest in the many facets of the Smithsonian. A Regent since March 13, 1980, he was a member of the Regents' Personnel Committee, their Investment Policy Committee, and their Executive Committee. In his capacity as Chairman of the Executive Committee from 1982 he contributed to significant organizational improvements, helped manage transitions with prudence and characteristic even-handedness, and enhanced the understanding of the Smithsonian in the Congress and other influential circles at home and abroad.

The Regents here record their great debt and heartfelt gratitude to Carlisle H. Humelsine for his wise counsel and unfailing dedication to the best interests of the Institution. Like his service to other cultural institutions and to our nation more generally, his contributions to the "increase and diffusion of knowledge" at this Institution are indelibly inscribed in the annals of Smithsonian history. His presence will be sorely missed, but he will never be forgotten.
