Native American Museums Program

In addition to providing its ongoing services which include the annual newsletter, career counseling, and advice about planning and organizing a museum, the program realized two significant accomplishments. First, four Native Americans who worked with the program since its inception became employed by mainstream institutions in responsible positions. Second, the program developed and conducted a ten-day workshop, "orientation to museum work" for the American Indian Community Museum Project. Specifically designed to meet the education requests of the community, the workshop is credited towards Association of Arts degrees for the participants.

Smithsonian - Howard University Internship Program

As part of the program, five students and two faculty members spent a week at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center participating in field exercises and learning about research. They were joined by three faculty members from historically Black colleges who were observers. The faculty also visited the Mall to learn more about the Institution and opportunities for research and study.

Smithsonian Kellogg Project

Selected museums received funding to carry out demonstration programs which could serve as model educational programs for other museums. Three minority museums participated.
