The labor connected with the department of fishes has become so great that it would be for the good of the collection to excuse the curator from all other duties except those belonging to his division. The tap storage for alcohol and the wants of collectors in the field consume a good deal of time that would be profitably spent in working upon the fishes. A glance at the bibliography of papers based upon National Museum fishes will show something of the amount of care necessary to keep the collection in order.

It would be well to leave the work of bottling and labelling identified fishes entirely to the curator, and it should be impressed upon collaborators not belonging in the museum that it is desirable so to have specimens administered upon.
