PLAYBILL SALUTES TONY® COUPLES
[[images-black and white series of couples on stage]]
WHich one has the Tony? They both do...
Last month when the stars of The Silence of the Lambs, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, won the Oscar, it was noted that this was one of the few times in Academy Award history that two leading performers in the same film had garnered these top honors.
In theatre also, it is a relatively rare phenomenon when both the male and female leads in a play or musical walk away with the Tony Award. To date there have been only 12 of these Prize Couples.
We asked writer Mervyn Rothstein to tell us something about these winning twosomes, beginning with the first--Paul and Grace Hartman in the 1948 revue Angel in the WIngs--and concluding with last year's Tony Award winners, Jonathan Pryce and Lea Salonga in Miss Saigon.
Master Theatre Quiz...We are again featuring this popular QUiz. The first prize winner is awarded "A Lifetime of Theatregoing"--two tickets to a B'way show every year for as long as you live. There are also two second prizes of a "Great New York Evening" (tickets to a show and dinner at the fabulous San Domenico restaurant).
The ten master Theatre Quiz questions appear on pages--5,6,8,10,12,16,20,48,51,52. All the answers to these questions can be found somewhere in this edition of PLAYBILL. For more information about MASTER THEATRE QUIZ see page 66.
And don't forget to watch the Tony Awards telecast on Sunday, May 31 (CBS 9:00 to 11:00 P.M.). --Joan Allenman
