This indenture made this the 4th day of December AD one thousand eight hundred and sixty five between Angus Bethune of the State of North Carolina and County of Robeson of the one part and Jim McLean a freed laborer of the County and State aforesaid — of the second part— Witnesseth  — that the said Jim McLean hath covenanted and agreed to and with the said Angus Bethune to labor (himself and his wife) and do all kind of work on the farm or otherwise from the 27th day of April 1865 until the 1st day of January 1866 — to work ten hours per day — to be respectful in their behavior and any loss of time either by idleness or abscence or otherwise to be deducted from his wages. The said Angus Bethune agreeing to furnish the said freed laborer — his wife and four children with comfortable quarters — one pair of shoes - each for himself and wife — their food — the productions of a certain peice of ground allotted to him for the purpose of raising a crop for himself (the said peice of ground to receive the same cultivation as the said Angus Bethunes crop) and two weeks for himself & wife to labor for themselves to procure their clothing
