Edgecombe County }  

[[underlined]] This Indenture [[/underlined]] made & entered in this 1st Jany 1866 between R. H. Gatlin of the County & State aforesaid of the first part & Britton Boddie for himself & five children & Robert Thorp for himself & two children of the same County & State Witnesseth 

That said R. H. Gatlin is to furnish Land, teams necessary for its cultivation, provisions for teams & labourers, comfortable quarters & fuel.

The parties of the second part agree to work the land allotted to them diligently, and according to the directions of the first party [[for the?]] present year & shall receive for such labour one fourth (¼) of the lint cotton, peas & potatoes & corn — If either shall voluntarily leave he shall forfeit his former labour entirely & all interest in the Crop & for temporary time lost shall pay for rations & such lost time. They further agree to be respectful in their deportment, Kind to the teams placed at their disposal, to have no boisterous gathering of negroes upon the premises assigned them, and for damage willfully done to horses or other stock to be responsible

The party of the first part further agrees that if either of the second party should die during the year & while in his service fair wages shall be allowed for previous labour—
