The next day I carefully avoided him. The day after in the morning when it was raining and bleak & cold, a bunch of lilies of the valley and violets arrived with Pinky. Compliments. as I thought to say goodbye. I was a little sorry after the flowers for the way I had treated him, so as it was the last I thought I would be nice. First Mama said she would not leave the room but when the moment came she said: "I will have pity on him" and flew. So he arrived and I went forward and thanked him prettily, as they say to children, for the flowers and the brightness they brought with them on that dreary day. And he talked in his accustomed silly way
