Boeing Head Calls Clipper Trip Proof That U. S. Leads in Air

SEATTLE, June 28--The inauguration today of trans-Atlantic airline operation was characterized by [[?[[ L. Egtvedt, president of the Boeing Aircraft Company, designers and builders of the new Atlantic Clippers, as "a crowning achievement for the Pan American Airways System, and signal evidence of America's leadership in the aviation world. "The establishment of the Atlantic service is a fitting climax to years of successful pioneering in trans-oceanic airways operation on the part of Pan American Airways." he said. "and the giant Clippers themselves, which have made this service possible, are a culmination of years of research and progress in design and construction methods, not ony on the part of the Boeing Aircraft Company, but also the engine and propeller manufacturers, the equipment manufacturers, the materials companies and all the othr elements of the industry that contributed to the production of such trips.

Mr. Egtvedt said that in undertaking the task of producting the Huge Model 314 clippers for Pan American Airways' new Atlantic Service, the Boeing Aircraft Company set out to fill four exacting primary requirements; 1. To produce a ship capable of practicle transoceanic operation on the much larger scale than had ever before been possible. 2. To produce a machine which could be efficiently operated with a minimum of maintenance. 3. To provide efficiently unprecedented comfort, spaciousness and luxury for the passengers. 4 To develop as aircraft which would be as inherently safe as it could possibly be made with the existing knowledge of materials, equipment and the science of aviation.

"The Clippers that are now beginning tran-Atlantic service represents the answer to these requirements" Mr. Egtvedt said.

Mr. Egtvedt pointed out that the large size of the new Clippers made it possible to incorporate many advantages that would have been impossible in small ships. Outstanding among these, he said, is the advantage of being able to reach the power plants during flight by way of catwalks through the big wings. Another is the unprecedented size and convenient arrangement of the airplane's control room, proving exceptionally efficient working conditions for the new members. Still another, he said, is the spaciousness of the passenger deck, in which it was possible to include large and comfortable travel accommodaions, and such unusual features as a dining salon and a bridal suite.
