environmental effects )to use a modern expression) of war before nuclear weapons were invented. I wish I could have seen the place in peacetime.

Aw week or so after we moved in the owner of the farm returned with his wife and two small children. All were loaded on a wagon with bedding and other household effects they had taken with them when they fled in July. They had spent the intervening time at Coulommiers, he said, about 30 kilometers away. The people there had been hospitable but they were g;ad to get home. The farmer's wife got there just in time to have her third baby. The delivery was handled by our squadron medic, Captain Solomon Boykin. He had been a small-town practitioner in Mississippi. He probably felt more at home with obstetric cases than with gunshot wounds.
