COMMANDING

Entered the Army as a private in Troop F of the 11th Cavalry on July 30, 1930. Was appointed flying cadet on July 1, 1931, at Marsh Field, California. Completed primary training at that field.

Was transferred with the First Basic Class to be trained at the newly-completed Randolph Field, and finished advanced training at Kelly Field in July of 1932.

Was graduated as an attack pilot and served one year of active duty with the 13th Attack Squadron at Fort Crockett, Galveston, Texas. After completing one year of active duty as pilot, enlisted as a private in the Air Corps in September, 1933, at Chanute Field.

Was transferred to the First Provisional Transport Squadron in February, 1934, and remained on duty flying transports for this squadron, receiving a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army in July, 1935. Upon this appointment he was again assigned to the 13th Attack Squadron, which was then located at Barksdale Field, Shreveport, La.

After serving three years for this squadron was transferred to Randolph Field, Texas, as a primary flying instructor. At the beginning of the Civilian Pilot Training Program, was transferred to the Chicago School of Aeronautics, where he was on duty until May, 1941, at which time he was transferred to the Primary Flying School at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. Was transferred to the Tuskegee Army Flying School as Director of Training in December, 1941, and became Commanding Officer in December of 1942.
