History of Base Nursery (continued)

the childern of all military personnel residing on and off the Base. Nine children between the ages of 2 and 6 years were registered.

In 1948 a new board of Directors consisting of Honorary President Colonel B. O. Davis Jr., Medical Advisor, Major V. H. Marchbanks Jr, President, Virginia Hillery, Secretary, Alice Suggs, Treasury, Maxie Manning, Auditor Lydia McDonald, Project Director and Buyer-Lucille Gleed, was elected. Vacancies in the original board were filled by Ruth Hurd, Phyllis Jamison, Ecro Hill, Bernice Kirkpatrick, and Elvira McWilliams. Alice Suggs served as President most of the year.

This board instituted 2 sessions morning and afternoon, hired an additional worker, purchased new equipment and made many improvements in the Nursery. The committee provided funds for the Supervisor to take courses at Ohio State University, reduced the registration fee to $5.00 per year and secured financial aid from the Officer's Club

A peak attendance of 22 children was reached after several months. This number was never maintained, however, and after a years operation the club felt that the financial drain of the Nursery was too great for it's limited resources. As of January 1st, 1949, the Nursery became the responsibility of the Officers' Club.
