Unique Shower Parties
By Ruth T. Robertson
(Distributed by the Washington Bureau of this Newspaper, Frederick M. Kerby, Director.)

Showers are becoming more and more popular as a means of presenting friends with inexpensive and useful gifts. Years ago it was customary to have showers only for brides, or prospective brides; whereas today a prospective mother, or traveler, an invalid or a new home owner is often the recipient of such showers.
Only intimate friends are invited and the shower should always be a surprise to the person for whom it is intended. When the shower is held at the home of the one whom it is intended to honor, the guests either bring the refreshments or each one pays a small amount for purchasing them.
Table decorations should consist of flowers, appropriate place cards and favors.

SHOWERS FOR THE BRIDE

TROUSSEAU SHOWER: A trousseau shower should be given shortly after the engagement has been announced. Suitable gifts are such personal things as silk hose, garters, nightgowns, princess slips, negligee, vests, handkerchiefs, vanity case, toilet set, perfume, etc. Each gift is wrapped with a verse or message from the giver. If possible pack the gifts in a wardrobe trunk

that has been decorated with white ribbon and "Just Married" signs. A large express tag, conspicuously placed on the trunk is addressed
   Mrs.________ _____________
       Honeymoon City,
            State of Matrimony.

LINEN SHOWER: The following is a novel linen shower given a member by a card club of 24. Each of the 23 members giving the shower to the 24th member, contributed a dollar to a chosen committee of four who were to purchase the necessary supplies for the shower.
The committee purchased a good grade, medium weight linen, some color fast thread, and cross-stitch canvas. A special meeting was called for pulling threads and the following pieces were cut from the linen:
1 luncheon set with 6 napkins (this set consisted of 6 oblong pieces of linen, large enough to hold a plate,
silver, glass and cup and saucer, with a square for the center of the table; (this in preference to the great number of separate doilies usually obtained in lunch sets) 2 bridge table covers with 8 napkins to match, 2 card table covers and 2 runners each for the buffet, serving table, china closet and table. The group met once a week until these pieces were hemstitched and monogrammed. The monogram was finely done in color fast cross-stitch. Each set daintily wrapped in tissue paper tied with white ribbon, was carefully packed in a large heart shaped box. The shower was given after a regular bridge party. After the bridge prizes had been awarded, the hostess announced that Cupid had a prize to bestow to the most recent member of the "Martial State" club, Mrs. _______. (if the shower is given for a prospective bride the hostess would announce that Cupid had a prize to award to a recent candidate for membership.)
The monogram may be done in solid white, satin stitch, and the hemstitching by machine. Or a design in color may be applied to each piece, such as butterflies in various colors, clover blossoms, blue birds, fruit, etc. The edges may be blanket stitched, or if a border is made by drawing colored threads through the linen, the edge may be turned over and plainly hemmed. If it is not desired to make as many pieces as stated, the card table sets may be eliminated.
KITCHEN SHOWERS: Invite friends to spend an old fashioned afternoon darning and mending. Advise them to bring an article for the kitchen as a kitchen shower will be held later in the afternoon. Duplicate gifts may be avoided by having a list of kitchen supplies and asking the guests to choose one of them to bring, checking off each article as it is selected.
Run a clothes line back and forth in the kitchen and tie each gift to it. If the kitchen is large enough, serve refreshments on the kitchen table. The hostess requests the guest of honor to assist her with getting the refreshments. As soon as they start for the kitchen, the others follow.
PANTRY SHOWER: A pantry shower should be given as soon as the bride goes to housekeeping. This is a good time to have a surprise shower at the home of the bride. An intimate friend arranges to spend the afternoon with the bride (this in order that she will be home). At a given time the other guests arrive simultaneously, having met at a nearby place. A freezer of cream and a package of assorted cakes may
