LOCKBOURNE AIR FORCE BASE ----
The Eastern Area Air Force Track and Field Meet reached a sensational climax on Saturday afternoon, 12 June 1948, when Lockbourne Air Force Base snatched the first prize at crowded West High School Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. In a fast moving contest filled with an unusual quota of thrills and excitement, eleven teams, representing as many Air Force Bases, met in spirited competition and the going was rough and rapid.
The host base, Lockbourne, captured the prize gold trophy after compiling a mighty score of 65 1/3 points. Rugged Mitchell Air Force Base athletes seized second place and runner-up cup with a brilliant 49 5/6 points and was followed by Scott Air Force Base trackmen who edged in with 34 5/6 points to get the third place trophy. The remaining teams came in as follows: Langley AFB, Hampton, Virginia, with 28 1/4 points; Chanute AFB, Illinois, with 11 points; Selfridge AFB, Michigan, with 8 points; Griffis AFB, New York, with 5 points; Dow AFB, Maine, with 3 points; and Ft. Slocum, New York, with 2 points.
Mitchell AFB triumphed in the 120 yd. High Hurdles, the 100 yd. Dash, the 880 yd. Relay, the 220 Low Hurdles, the 440 yd. Relay, the 220 yd. Dash, and the 440 yd. Hurdles, by winning first places in each of those events.
Lockbourne AFB took first places in the 1 Mile Run, the 330 yd. Dash, the 880 yd. Dash, the 1 Mile Relay, the Shot Put,
