New York 22, N.Y.

January 30, 1963

My dear Miss Bentley-Cranch:

Your letter of January 23rd, asking for information in connection with the study you are making on CORNEILLE DE LYON, has duly reached me.

I am happy to learn of your undertaking, for this artist of true merit has been so very little studied and indeed deserves to be better known.

The information you have about the portrait of [[underlined]] René Du Puy Du Fou [[/underlined]] is correct, except that it is not in 1963 that my Firm possessed this fine portrait - for it was sold a great many years ago, in fact in 1947; when, through an intermediary, it was acquired by Mr. CLOWES of Indianapolis.

The [[underlined]] pedigree [[/underlined]], as we have it in our records, reads:

"Walter Gay, Paris; Jules Straus, Paris; Jacques Seligmann & Co. and Clowes Collection."

[[underlined]] Bibliography [[/underlined]]: Waldemar George, "L'Art Français et l'Esprit de Suite" - March, April 1937, P.28 - reprod.

It was also [[underlined]] exhibited [[/underlined]]:

1904, Louvre, "Exp. des Primitifs Fr.."No.177, p.74.
1931, Cleveland, "Art through the Ages".
1935, Brussels, "Exp. de l'Art Fr..", No.925, p. 220.
1937, Paris, "Chefs d'Oeuvres de l'Art Fr..", No. 49, p.29.

Further, as long as you wish to obtain additional information about other portraits by CORNEILLE DE LYON that passed through my Firm's hands, I should draw your attention to an equally delightful one, today in the same CLOWES COLLECTION - I say today, for I believe it has remained in it.
