CHURCH FACT SHEET HISTORY

NINETEENTH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH is located on the spot where Baptists first worshiped in the City of Washington, D. C.

This Church, first known as the [[underlined]]First Colored Baptist Church[[/underlined]], was organized August 29, 1839.

On November 16, 1870, this body became known as the NINETEENTH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH.

The Church has been served by twelve pastors since its founding.  Dr. Walter H. Brooks, served for 63 years as pastor--the longest period served here by any other pastor.

Some of our most distinguished Doctors, Lawyers, Educators and Federal Employees are sons and daughters of this congregation.

The White House, home of the President of the United States, is located four blocks east of the church.

The Church is located in the heart of the City's rapidly expanding Federal and Business Metropolis.

The Church is active in Home Missions, Foreign Missions, Evangelism and Christian Education.

Ten Baptist Churches have been set apart under the direction of this church.

Several organizations were founded in the church among which are Weyland Seminar (now Virginia Union) and the National Association of Colored Women's Club, Inc.

More than thirty clubs, boards and auxiliaries comprise the church's working groups.

This Church is one of the thirteen oldest Negro Congregations in the United States.
