IRENE OLIVER (Bess), a Fullbright scholar and winner of international voice competitions in Toulouse and Geneva, is currently a member of the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. Her association with Porgy and Bess began in 1971 in East Berlin where she was chosen by the fabled Walter Felsenstein for the title role at the Komiche Oper. Performances of Bess followed on Munich television, in Copenhagen and for the Michigan Opera Theater. Her American debut with the Dallas Civic Opera was heralded by critics and audiences alike. A well known television and recording artist in East Germany, Irene Oliver was Italy's first black Mimi in La Boheme at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1964.
WILMA SHAKESNIDER (Serena) is a native of Washington, D.C. and a graduate of Howard Universtiy and Juilliard. She has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the New York Lyric Opera, the Saint Paul Summer Festival and the Clarion Concert Series at Alice Tully Hall. A former assistant professor of voice and black vocal literature at the University of Buffalo/SUNY, Miss Shakesnider has given several recitals there during the past few years. This year she received a Federation of New York Musicians Grant while studying with Stephanie Scourby.
DELORES IVORY-DAVIS (Serena), a native of Detroit, studied music education at Wayne State University and taught for a year in the Detroit public schools. During the past five years, she has had a Carnegie Hall Debut Recital, has performed major oratorio with choral societies in and around New York, performed as soloist with the New York Opera Title III Program, served as artist-in-residence with the St. Paul Opera, and recently recreated the role of Bess with the Springfield Symphony.
LARRY MARSHALL (Sportin' Life) recently played Hamlet in Rockabye Hamlet on Broadway. Also on Broadway, he appeared as Valentine in Two Gentlemen of Verona, in the roles of Hud and Berger in Hair, and in Inner City. At Lincoln Center, he appeared as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream. He was featured soloist in Leonard Bernstein's Mass which was performed at the Kennedy Center and the Metropolitan Opera House. His film appearances include Panic in Needle Park and Jesus Christ Superstar. This season he will be appearing with Michael Tilson Thomas.
BARBARA ANN WEBB (Maria), a native of Houston, Texas, now makes her home in New York. She attended the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and while still a student appeared as Antonia in Tales of Hoffmann and Leonora in Il Travatore. She also won the Pennsylvania Women's Voice Competition. From 1952-55 she appeared in the international company of Porgy and Bess singing the role of Serena. Miss Webb has many Broadway shows to her credit, among them Sherry, the musical version of The Man Who Came to Dinner.
ANDREW SMITH (Crown), one of today's most exciting new baritones made his formal debut in 1974 as Amonasro in Aida at New York State's Artpark under the baton of Christopher Keene. In July of 1975, he performed the difficult role of Roderigo in Lulu at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Since then, he has sung such roles as Escamillo in Carmen, Roderigo in Don Carol, Rigoletto, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera, Scarpia
