GEORGE ROBERT MERRITT (Crown) comes from North Carolina and is a graduate of Hartt College and Catholic University He is an Alice Peyton DuPont Award winner in the Atlantic Regional Met auditions. He has performed principal roles in operas with the New Haven Opera; appeared in the Park Concerts with the New York Municipal Orchestra; was baritone soloist for the premiere of Mario Braggiotti's Gettysburg Cantata; and played Walter in the Hartford Producing Guild Production of Young Gifted and Black.
ELIZABETH GRAHAM (Clara) is a native of Shelby, North Carolina She has a Bachelor of Music degree from North Carolina School of the Arts, a Master's degree from Florida State University and is presently a doctoral candidate. Ms. Graham has won such competitions as N.A.T.S., Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions, Opera of the Palm Beaches Audition and is a winner of the Young Artists Award. Porgy and Bess is her first professional engagement.
JACK O'BRIEN (Director) is a graduate of the University of Michigan where his original comedy Land Ho! won the BMI Award of 1961. He was associate and staff director of the famed APA Repertory until it disbanded in 1969. With Bob James, he wrote the 1972 Broadway musical hit The Selling of the President. Directing assignments include The Importance of Being Earnest and You Can't Take It With You for ACT in San Francisco, and Alfred the Great for Boston's Trinity Square Repertory. He has also directed several operas for Dallas Civic Opera and San Francisco Opera. Recently, he completed directly the PBS production of the The Time of Your Life.
JOHN DE MAIN (Musical Director) is one of only nine Exxon/Arts Endowment conductors in the United State today. A graduate of Juilliard and a 1972 winner of the Julius Rudel Aware, Mr. De Main was formerly assistant conductor with New York City Opera, associate conductor of NET Opera Theatre and San Francisco spring season, and conductor of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Since 1975, he has been Music Director of Texas Opera Theater. This past year, Mr. De Main has guest conducted the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Pittsburgh, San Diego and Houston Symphonies as well as the American Premiere of Il Cordovano for the American Opera Center at Juilliard.
MABEL ROBINSON (Choreographer and Assistant Director) recently choreographed the Urban Arts Corps production I'm Laugh', But I Ain't Tickled and Play Mas. Her choreography for Your Arm's Too Short to Box With God received acclaim at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto last year. As an actress-dancer she has appeared on Broadway in Murderous Angels, Golden Boy, Black Nativity, and Treemonisha. Motion picture credits include Cotton Comes to Harlem, Stand Up and Be Counted, and Funny Lady. Miss Robinson is also frequently seen on TV.
