Dear Playbill... Dear PLAYBILL: I thoroughly enjoy your feature called "At This Theatre." The other night, while seeing Morning's At Seven at the Lyceum Theatre, I recalled that I had seen a play there many years ago starring Lenore Ulric. Can you refresh my memory? --Ethel C. Dynan West End, N.J. Ms. Ulric appeared in two plays at the Lyceum: The Heart of Wetona (1916) and in Tiger Rose, a big hit in 1917. *** Dear PLAYBILL: Surely, a key factor in promoting a Broadway show is the creation of an arresting logo. I would like to know who created the highly effective eyes and brows logo for Deathtrap. --Thomas Monsell Greenport, N.Y. [[image: logo showing a man's forehead, brows, and eyes above legend DEATHTRAP]] That is the work of Frank Verlizzo, Senior Art Director at J. Walter Thompson. According to the artist (who signs his works "Fraver"), the producers wanted a logo that would "grab your attention," so he came up with his own eyebrows and fictitious eyes. Mr. Verlizzo also created the ghoulish figures for Sweeney Todd's logo. *** Dear PLAYBILL: Did Charles Strouse write the music to "Tomorrow" specifically for Annie, or had he composed it earlier for public television. I recall a song called "The Way It Is Now," from the TV series, "The Great American Dream Machine," and I could swear that it's the same tune. --James Propp Great Neck, N.Y. Mr. Strouse says you have a remarkable ear. He first wrote that melody for an industrial show, then revised it for "The Great American Dream Machine" and finally polished it for use in Annie. *** Dear PLAYBILL: Recently, in a PLAYBILL article, I read that Marlon Brando had played Marchbanks to Katherine Cornell's Candida. I saw Miss Cornell in that play many years ago and I believe that it was a very young Burgess Meredith who played Marchbanks, not Marlon Brando. --Ruth Shapiro New York, N.Y. Miss Cornell appeared in Candida a number of times on Broadway, from 1924 to 1946. In 1942, Mr. Meredith was her Marchbanks; in 1946, Brando played the part. *** Dear PLAYBILL: When I saw A Day In Hollywood/A Night In The Ukraine recently, some of the dance numbers reminded me of similar numbers in a show called Double Feature that I saw last year at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven. Is there a connection between these two shows? --Colette Funteral Devon, Ct. The shows are different, but there is a connection. The choreography for both these musicals was created by the same person: Tommy Tune. *** Dear PLAYBILL: I have been going crazy since I saw 42nd Street at the Winter Garden. In the first act there's a song called "Getting Out Of Town." I know I heard that in another show many hears ago, but I can't remember which one. --Jerry Hickey Yes; this song was first heard in the Ed Wynn revue, The Laugh Parade, at the Imperial Theatre in 1931. In that show it was called "Got To Go To Town" and it had different lyrics. [[line]] Have a question about the theatre? Write to PLAYBILL, Dept.
