SUITABLE
Classic, clean and natural are the keywords in menswear this spring. SAKS FIFTH AVENUE on its sixth floor offers a wide selection of suits running the gamut from a dark-hued linen, single-breasted by Calvin Klein, marked for '81 by its slightly wider lapel ($280), to the mix-match sports coat and trousers by Giorgio Armani (about $500)

At BARNEY'S N.Y., 7th Ave. and 17th St., Armani turns up with linen and cotton suits from his men's couture collection. The putty and petroleum blue on the second floor Designer Boutique are the fashion stand-outs ($700-$800). Also in the Designer Boutique are Cerruti suits in cotton and linen blends featuring Italian-tailored plaids and stripes in tones of gray, navy or beige ($500 to $600). More stripes, plaids and checks for the young conservatives in the Madison Room where prices are lower ($150-$250). Silks, linen blends and all-worsted tropicals can be found in the Oak Room where Hickey Freeman and Oxxford reside ($300 to $800).

VESTED INTEREST
At WALLACH'S three-piecers in lightweight wool/polyester blends come in stripes and plaids, created by such well-known menswear designers as Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Hart Schaffner Marx and, again Hickey Freeman and Cerruti ($165 to $500). LORD & TAYLOR also has a wide selection of classic vested suits in lightweight tropical worsted, both all wool and wool with polyester ($215 to $325). These are on the tenth floor Men's Shop and were designed by the likes of Evan Picone and Bill Blass. For warmer weather L&T suggests the same silhouette, minus the vest, in a cotton blend. Khaki solids run neck and neck with all manner of stripes for first place.

COTTON KNITS
PAUL STUART at 45th and Madison has them in all varieties: cool and classic in pastel-tinted Sea Island cotton, pale shaded stripes from Italy, and the store's own emblem shirt featuring a tiny man on a rail. Pair them off with classic canvas duck trousers in khaki, white, Breton red, or grass green for 81's casual "establishment" look.

Cotton knits also abound at Burberrys (57th just east of Fifth). Here you will find long-sleeved V-neck cotton cabled sweaters which can be worn alone or over a shirt. They turn up in ubiquitous pastels as well as the traditional colors – navy, white, yellow and beige. Burberrys also offers a classic polo in Sea Island cotton. Comes in 16 shades at $47.50 as well as an assortment of stripes at $50. Terrific with Burberrys' navy blazer or a linen sports coat.

More in cotton knits at SAKS FIFTH with designers like Versace responsible for white-collared, bright-colored polo shirts ($38.50) and cotton knit sweaters, solid or with contrasting trim ($47.50 to $70).

LORD & TAYLOR offers a cotton sweatshirt by Ralph Lauren for Polo in such offbeat (for men) colors as violet and peach. A nifty topper to Lauren's white cotton trousers ($70).

And at BLOOMINGDALE'S an entire department, Le Mistral, is now devoted strictly to the T shirt, polo shirt and sweatshirt. There are solids and stripes in a wide range of colors and combinations; an updating of the classic T with plackets, collars and scoops at the neckline; and the store's own emblem polo, an imprinted flag and anchor design inscribed "Le Mistral."
