French's Second Despatch Sept. 17th

The 7th French Army Corps were railed up from the south to the east of Amiens.

29th Aug. The French 6th Army got in position, with its right on Roye.

5th French Army was behind the Oise between La Fère & Guise.

The enemy was pursuing vigorously.

Visit from Gen. Joffre 29th, arranged a further retirement, carried out same day, to Compèigne - Soissons.  Right flank of German army seriously endangers line communications with Havre.

In spite of defeats administered on right of 5th Army it was not part of Gen. J's plan to pursue this advantage.  General retirement to the Marne ordered.

New army the 9th formed - took its place between right of 5th & left of 4th Armies.

Sept. 3d British in position south of Marne between Lagny & Signy-Signets - ordered to return behind the Seine.

Sept. 5th Joffre informs 7th French that he will take offensive, will wheel 6th Army pivoting on the Marne up to the Ourcq where it shall attach 1st German Army.  British to change position  Left resting on Marne & right on 5th Army
