I had only time to order myself something to eat (for somehow eating on the train had been impossible) when the telephone rang.

"Mr Bacon to see you".  He came up all smiles Everything was arranged.  We would all get off via Southampton Havre tonight.  He was like a big boy, he had simply run from the station to tell me.  He went off to the Embassy with the understanding that he was to call me up about seven.
